The coffee post
I'm nearly done acquiring a taste for it. My approach has been wholistic—not only have I been forcing down a cup a day, I've changed my iPod wallpaper to a picture of a steaming cup with the caption 'sweet nectar of life' and have been listening to 'Java Jive' on repeat. I'm talking black coffee by the way. I decided to start with that partly because of a preference for simplicity and partly because I've been harbouring a no-longer-secret desire to be a person who drinks black coffee of epic strength. Seems to be working out—I ordered a cappuccino at McD's the other day and blergh.
This week I have learned that:
1) You should leave the water to cool a bit before brewing coffee because boiling water makes the coffee release more undesirable bitterness.
2) Black coffee is one of the healthier ways to get your caffeine—less sugar than stuff like Lift+ and V.
(Let me know if either of these are actually bollocks.)
3) Coffee + iPod = air piano. Question: favourite music for air piano/guitar/instrument of choice? Actually, favourite air instrument?
4) I am willing to torment my taste-buds for the sake of feeling awesome but not to improve my health. Mum wanted to know why, if I can acquire a taste for coffee, I can't do the same for Weetbix (pictured on the right).

You know you've been playing too much Nethack when you refer to coffee as a potion of sleep resistance. Sweeney Todd Lundgren (= one for Ally)
Coffee, the finest organic suspension ever devised. Star Trek: Voyager (= one for me)
Caffeine is my shepherd; I shall not doze.
It maketh me to wake in green pastures:
It leadeth me beyond the sleeping masses.
It restoreth my buzz:
It leadeth me in the paths of consciousness for its name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of addiction,
I will fear no Equal™:
For thou art with me; thy cream and thy sugar they comfort me.
Thou preparest a carafe before me in the presence of The Starbucks:
Thou anointest my day with pep; my mug runneth over.
Surely richness and taste shall follow me all the days of my life:
And I will dwell in the House of Mochas forever.

Lol! How long have you been going for? I don't think I'll ever acquire a taste for it, because even if I didn't hate the taste, it will never taste as good as it smells, and therefore every drink would be a little cup of disappointment.
Re: 2. I'll just take chocolate. What do you mean, it's not healthy? It has antioxidants and stuff. And dairy, and cocoa beans. That's a vegetable, right?
Re: 3. air drums, no question. One of my favourites is 'Summer Sunshine' by the Corrs - when it breaks into big fat extra percussion every chorus. 'My Sharona' is a good one for air guitar though, and I think '1000 Miles' by Vanessa Carlton is a good one for air piano.
Re: 4. You don't like weetbix? What kind of Kiwi kid are you?! :-P What is it that you don't like about them? I love them so much that I'm willing to forget that Sanitarium are owned by a 7th Day Adventist Church, and all the proceeds are probably going to brainwash little children. Or switch to HomeBrand.
Having read this post, I suspect that you just MIGHT be more hooked on coffee than I am, which considering the amount that I drink, is quite an impressive feat. Congratulations. :P
Hmm, favourite air instrument. Probably something large and ridiculous. Like air...double bass?
Hehe, I like the geeky PHP coffee quote about pot - coffee = switched off brain. It makes me LOL.
You haven't said whether your computer's desktop features coffee. If it doesn't, it should: http://wallpaperstock.net/hot-coffee_wallpapers_8908_1280x800_1.html
And by 'Summer Sunshine' I mean 'Angel'. Song ID FAIL.
@ Holly: LMFAO@ air double bass. Plz to play next time you're riding a bus and listening to your iPod?
Brooke: Less than two weeks. I'm not quite up to liking it but I have stopped gagging.
Don't worry, I'm not replacing chocolate! Yes, beans = vegetables = healthy.
Why didn't I think of air drums? 'Summer Sunshine' is a good one! That song always cheers me up a little bit. Wait... *reads second comment* Oh. 'Angel' too, lol. My favourite is 'Baba O'Riley' by The Who, ever since Hugh Laurie did air piano to it once in House, hehe.
I've never been a cereal person... Cocoa pops is about as much as I can handle. Lol, you wouldn't have thought breakfast would become an ethical decision.
Holly: I'm slightly obsessed with the attempt to like coffee but not so much with coffee itself. I don't want to get hooked!
Air double bass?! WIN.
About my desktop: it does now!
Brooke: Nooo. You cannot tell me that about Sanitarium! My love for peanut butter is now forever tainted! :(
Jenny: That makes sense, but beware, you WILL get hooked eventually! *giggle*
Jenny: it's because coffee is awesome & trendy and gives you energy, whereas Weetbix are stodgy and unfashionable and give you a heavy lump of bran in your stomach.
"it will never taste as good as it smells" is the problem I have with most herbal teas.
You're right about leaving the water to cool down a bit - boiling water is not a good thing to fling cavalierly on your sweet sweet grounds.
I tend to do a combination of air singing (or lip-syncing, I guess) and air guitar. Also I head-bang. There are a lot of songs that bring this on. A lot a lot.
Also: "You know you've been playing too much Nethack when you refer to coffee as a potion of sleep resistance. Sweeney Todd Lundgren (= one for Ally)" Ahahahah! Hahahaha. Ah. NetHack. It is such a time-eater.
Word verification is 'folfite' which is not a real chemical.
Mmm, coffee, how I love thee.
Black and bitter especially,
I'll have a mug or three.
Cream and sugar, not for me.
Why are you trying to acquire a taste for coffee?
For the most part energy drinks are crap and taste disgusting. Except for one I found that's all natural (ginseng, ginko biloba, et) and tastes like citrus soda. On those rarest of occasions, Coffee + Guru = Zipping Mish
About the pepper picture, I'm not sure I wanna know. Haha.
Actually, coffee should be brewed between 195-205 degrees and should remain that way after brewing.
All too often, coffee is under-heated during the brewing process and then burns while it is sitting on the heating plate - you should always look for a thermal carafe or at the very least drink your coffee quickly.
The problem is that only one sub-$100 automatic drip coffee maker is capable of sufficiently heating the coffee while it is brewing. This is the $90 Zojirushi model.
However, a the best option for the best tasting coffee is to find yourself an inexpensive manual drip maker like Chemex. These are less convenient because they are - well - not automatic but manual makers brew a better cup of joe than even $400 automatic models.
Black coffee is much better than coffee with milk - but it takes a while to get used to. I am not sure if it is much better for you though. I mean one teaspoon of sugar in a morning cup is not poison.

Personally, I prefer my French press bodum- akin to brewing tea. I've been using one for six years now and doubt I'll own a drip maker again. It not only tastes better (imho) it takes up less counter space.
