BTT: Worse?

btt button

Which is worse?

Finding a book you love and then hating everything else you try by that author, or
Reading a completely disappointing book by an author that you love?

I think finding a book you love and then hating everything else by the author is worse. I get really excited when I find a new favourite and have high hopes for the author's other works. Still, with living authors at least, there's always the hope that you'll love their next book. :-)

I think that expecting to love everything a person writes is a bit unrealistic. Not unheard of, obviously (I'm thinking Austenites), but when an author is trying lots of different things it makes sense that not all of them overlap with my taste. Come to think of it, most of my favourite authors have written series I never got into. What is really disappointing is when a beloved series jumps the shark mid-flight.

Happy BTT everybody!

Fiction is like a spider's web, attached ever so slightly perhaps, but still attached to life at all four corners. Virginia Woolf

I think the latter option is worse. I always have exalted views of authors, and want to love everything they write (sometimes to the point where I convince myself that I love a book even when I don't). It makes me sad when I can't. Finding a new book then disliking everything by the same author isn't so bad, because you haven't got attached to the author yet, and besides, there's all my favourites to go back to!

That Virginia Woolf quote is made of pure spun-sugar awesome.

Also, I read your 'looking forward to' thing as 'Eating Adam's Rib'. Mmmm spare ribs nomnomnomnom

Hmm... Your answer makes a lot of sense. I think I tend to build up unrealistically exalted views of exciting new authors too though, lol. Yay for old favourites - worst thing of all would be going back to one of those and hating it!

Mmm spun sugar.

Hehe. I need to change that actually - to looking forward to rewatching it! If you're curious, the trailer is hilarious IMO, though maybe not deliberately.

I agree, I am always disappointed when I read a great book by an author only to dislike other books they have written.

I agree! I always get excited when I think I've found a new favorite author, only to never have another book measure up.
