Music Monday: Christmas Day
Listen carefully because this week there's going to be a test afterward. :-P Actually it's more like a creative writing exercise. The song is 'Christmas Day' by Dido. What I want to know is, why didn't he come back?!
The way I see it there are two basic choices:
- He intended to come back but was prevented, most likely by dying.
- He was a total cad from the beginning.
A young gentleman came riding past
On a snow blue winter's day.
He asked to drink, by our fire,
And I was pleased to let him stay.
He drank there quietly for a while,
Then he turned and said to me,
"Your eyes are green, like summer grass.
Your lips are red like a fresh-cut rose.
Your hair is soft like an Irish stream,
And your voice is filled with sweet beauty."
And the last words I heard him say
Were "I shall return, for you, my love, on Christmas day."
The night will come but I won't sleep,
As I watch the stars that lead him.
I cannot place where his is,
But still my heart goes with him.
I'm savin all my Sunday clothes
For the day the day that I'll be leavin.
Father knows, my sister knows,
And my friends, they're happy for me
And the priest he says, "You should thank God,
For the blessing of such beauty."
And the last words I heard him say,
Were "I shall return for you, my love, on Christmas day.
I shall return for you, my love, on Christmas day."
And the last words I heard him say,
Were the last words I ever heard him say.
"I shall return for you, my love, on Christmas day.
I swear, I will return on Christmas day,
And yes, I shall return on Christmas day
I shall return, for you, on Christmas day,
My love I will return on Christmas day,
I shall return, my love on Christmas day,
On Christmas day..."

Aww I remember this song. It's sad!
Right. Well. Why didn't he come back? Personally I think the answer is rather obvious. Just replace the elf in this pic with whatever you think the man looks like. Done.
P.S: I wish Dido still wrote songs like this, they're much nicer to listen to than the ones I've heard from Safe Trip Home. :(
Lol at the elf. That's a possibility (?) I hadn't considered!
Yeah, I'm not so keen on Safe Trip Home... It's not like it's bad, but I definitely like the older stuff more.
I think that the actual truth is closer to #2, but that the girl actually knew about it. I am of the opinion that there was some serious miscommunication (owing to the girl's refusal to wear her hearing aids) as well as some wishful thinking on her part. Basically I think he had another girl on the go at the same time, whose name was Christina (aka Chris). He'd already asked her to marry him but she was taking a long time to answer and so he'd gone off on holiday while waiting and met this girl. He fell in love with the new girl but was honest with her about Christina and made it clear that our heroine was his second choice. He left after a short while, promising that "I will return for you when Chris says 'nay'". Enter mishearings, misunderstandings, and general depression and yearning on her part.
Creative enough for you?
(It actually took me an entire day to come up with something plausible that might be misheard as 'on Christmas Day.' :-P )
Lol! Brilliant!
"Enter mishearings, misunderstandings, and general depression and yearning on her part."
^ Sounds like the plot of about every second rom com hehe.
My new theory is that he did return, but either he had become mute or she deaf in the meantime, so that she never HEARD him say another word.
